In response to Uplands reply: The fastest response we have ever received. Only 3 days. Must be a public forum is more effective. Yes, there was a decade of low fees and no increases. Unfortunately, that was before we arrived at Uplands. Yes, there are residents APPOINTED to the Board of Directors. The Directors, including residents are APPOINTED by the Governance Committee which is APPOINTED by the Board of Directors which APPOINTS the Governance Committee. Go figure. President of the Assembly has no vote on the Board of Directors. The statement that fees are equal to or lower than those in the area is a false equivalency because Uplands Independent Living Residents purchase and maintain their own homes. At other establishments, independent living residences are provided and maintained by their management. The Wellness-Rehabilitation Center and pool was promoted as investment that would pay off the debt incurred.with Rehab patients and physical therapy, That has not been the case. I sincerely wish that Uplands could succeed. Unfortunately, mismanagement has been the rule for so long that I am not sure this is possible.Uplands is $13 million in debt. If you are or become an Uplands Village Independent Living resident, you pay off this debt. Two people in independent living pay $1383 per month for very little. You will not vote for the Board of Directors because Uplands has no members despite the fact you will sign a 'membership' contract. You will have no say in taking on debt. But you will be required to pay it back. If you have an issue with management including the Board of Directors they will not respond in hopes you will give up asking. If you leave Uplands because they have raised fees 88% in four years and you can not afford to live there any longer (upon entry we were vetted able to afford Uplands), they will insist you continue to pay maintenance fees of $210/month and give them 20% of the selling price of your home. Needless to say, you will not receive any refund on your initial 'membership' funds. The state of Tennessee is business friendly so the possibility of suing is financially prohibitive. If you are okay with this, by all means, come to Uplands. We no longer live there.

We have happily lived at Uplands for 25 years in our own home. We appreciate the staff and are comforted by the fact that should we need additional care, we can move to Assisted Living or Long Term Care or Memory Care. We appreciate the positive, progressive, and helpful attitudes of the Uplands residents.

Great place to not only live but thrive. 500+ acre campus with lakes, trails, trees, streams and even waterfalls (plus a pool and gym). Not only that but also a myriad of continuing education classes. A few residents are even involved in local politics to the point of holding elected office. We don't move here to sit in rocking chairs but to engage in life. When the time comes to really slow down we can stay in our own homes, move to assisted living, nursing care or memory care. Meanwhile, we're still in the game. (And because the campus is so large social distancing is not a problem). One bit of icing on the cake is the local population; they're some of the nicest people you'll ever meet

We chose to retire at Uplands Village in 2010 and have found this most affordable community to be beyond our expectations with a lovely rural setting, creative and active resident centered programs, and staff that are utterly devoted to caring for residents in independent living, assisted living, memory care (with option for spouse to cohabit), Wellness Center and Nursing Home. Since we arrived an aquatic center, cafe, and wellness gym have been built...all within walking distance of our home!
