In May 2014, I was blessed to find A Helping Hand home for seniors, a short drive from my home in Manhattan Beach. Owner Sue Cooper provides an immaculately clean and comfortably furnished home for 6 (lucky) residents. The day to day rhythm of the home includes lots of stimulation for the residentsthe activity guide, the piano player, volunteer visitors and, most importantly, the gentle and compassionate staff offering a snack, a bit of conversation, a home-cooked meal, a blanket for a TV watcher. Family members and friends are welcome to come by anytime to enjoy a cup of coffee or a game with their loved onejust like home! The get-togethers Sue hosts throughout the year give the residents and their families a sense of community. A Helping Hand is truly a home away from home.On a personal note: 5 years ago, my then 95 year-old mom required help with all of her daily needs. She was clearly affected by dementia but could communicate and sing her favorite songs. She walked slowly but unaided. Over the next 5 years, Sue Cooper and her wonderful staff supported my mom as her body gave in to her advanced years. We celebrated her 100th birthday at A Helping Hand in February 2019, 8 months before she died at this home away from home in October 2019.
