My mother has lived at Greenspring for 12 years in an independent apartment. It used to be wonderful but not so much anymore. My 87-year-old mother remains in the facility because of her friendships and the social connections which earned the facility its second star. This review is based upon the recent reported news that there have been 4 deaths and at least 50 residents ill with a respiratory illness which has resulted in the intervention of the Fairfax County Health Department reported on many local news outlets.Today, my mother called us because she is feeling sick with respiratory symptoms. So we called the in-house health clinic anticipating that she would be seen due the reported epidemic. This was unfortunately not the case and my daughter had to take her to urgent care. Thank goodness we are local! The Food - It used to be fresh and dietary restrictions were listed right on the menu so it was easy for my mother to follow a gluten free diet as required by her celiac disease diagnosis. Now, not only are gluten free options not listed but neither are many other special diets. The food is more processed and sent in pre-packaged. I believe only sugar free food is notated. Now, she is expected to access an app on a smart phone according to the Director of Dining Services, Ty Wilson. My mother does not use a smart phone. Mr. Wilson explained that that there was not a dietician on staff who is qualified to accurately list the information and dining decisions are made at a cooperate office. These considerations are made at a corporate level not at the residence. Residents do not have the option to opt out of the food plan.Social Work - My mother has been urged to move to assisted living because she cannot access the gluten free menu and she has memory challenges. She does not want to leave her apartment and her cats. Fortunately, she has long term care insurance which enables her to afford to bring in help. Medical - My mother does not care for her physician. She is picky however the physician does not seem to have the skill set necessary to speak with elderly patients. Finally, the facility seems to benefit from the booming senior citizen population which has resulted in a decrease in quality. I fully anticipate being contacted to see if my mother would like to leave as a result of this post. She does NOT because she has autonomy and a bevy of friends. However, I believe that she might not be alive if we were not local and had the ability to check-in and help out.

I agree with the review below, I can only talk about the Woodland Skies restaurant since I have witnessed myself how the kitchen staff is filled with bullies and under qualified managers and supervisors. They scream at you one day and act like nothing happen the next day. They should really rethink the type of training they give their kitchen managers and supervisors at the Woodland Skies Restaurant. Its wonderful company for all the residents, sadly I cant say the same for its kitchen staff and its work environment.

Horrible work environment, my brother in law works there and has suffered greatly due to favoritism and negligence by his supervisors Giovani and Priscilla. The worst part is that nobody does anything, all they do is hide the problems away. So sad to see this, hopefully the work environment at Greensprings improves.

My grandmother is a resident here and although I live far away, I have been able to visit her here a handful of times over the years. The staff is always friendly and the residents seem genuinely happy. My grandmother loves to talk to people and so she has managed to make many friends here, with a lot of the staff knowing her on a first name basis. My grandmother has strict dietary needs and they are always able to accommodate her with specially marked menus. It seems she can always contact the chef if someone is unsure about certain dishes. The grounds are nice and the units are spacious, she was able to bring over her best furniture from their home when she moved in, including a large grandfather clock! On my first couple visits, about 8/7 years ago I noted that cell reception within the building was terrible, this has since improved. My most recent visit was just last month where I was able to come over a few times over the course of a few days and I had no issues with reception. They are currently doing some renovations and moving things around but they seem to be doing it with care and keeping the residents well informed.
