Just moved my mother out of Lake Haven after 7 years of residency. I should have done it sooner. Here are some things to know if you are considering moving yourself or a loved one here.1). Your rent WILL increase $40-$50 EVERY year. I met with the manager a couple of years ago and asked why the rent for senior citizens, mostly on fixed incomes, rises 8-10 time higher than the annual Cost of Living Index rate. I was told that they raise their rents in accordance with what all of the other apartments in the area do. But there are no other senior living apartments in the nearby vicinity. However, there are several, much newer, upscale luxury apartments in the area, so be prepared for rent increases EVERY Year! The manager also said that these decisions are made by the management company and not the onsite personnel. So I asked for the contact information to the management company and she wouldn't identify who that is, or provide any contact information whatsoever.2). If you have issues with appliances, AC, or pretty much anything else, you will wait lengthy periods of time for repairs, and most times it's a band-aid fix, and will be a repetitive issue. My mother's oven would not maintain temperature. We reported it several times and they would send their maintenance repairman to look at it. Every time he would replace the burner with a used one from an old stove that they had scavenged parts from. It never corrected the issue, and the day I moved my mother out, the oven would still register 100 degrees less than it was set for, and sometimes more. I know because I placed a thermometer in the oven to register temperature. Also, her AC unit would continuously freeze up and stop working. She would have to turn the unit off for hours and wait for the ice to melt in the inside unit before she could turn it back on. It was still malfunctioning the day I moved her out. Also, the faux wood laminate in the 2nd bathroom/utility room started to come up. My mother almost fell when she tripped on it while doing laundry. She reported it and the maintenance man came to her unit, placed glue under the laminate, and left a wooden 4'x4' piece of lumber laying on top of it to hold it down while the glue dried. He told her she (not he) could pick it up in 24 hours. Well guess what? When she picked it up the following day, the glue had oozed out onto the piece of lumber, dried, and pulled even more of the floor up. The floor was still in this condition the day I moved her out! She also spent the entire last month she lived there with no porch light because they wouldn't get someone out to fix it.Overall these apartments are old, outdated, and in serious need of updating and repair. The parking lot and drive areas are full of loose gravel, pot holes, and in overall poor condition. The security gate works half of the time, and is left open (sometimes for entire weekends) the other half...not very secure for the senior residents!Keep in mind also that these apartments are located on a road where vehicle traffic routinely moves at 60mph+ with no traffic light or stop sign at the entrance/exit and pretty much in the middle of two traffic lights approximately 3/4 mile to one mile on either end of the apartments, so they can be very dangerous for senior drivers.About the only positive I can say about these apartments is that the overall location is good with convenient grocery shopping nearby and other restaurants/fast food establishments. However, for roughly the same money, there are other newer, nicer places in the area. I moved my mother to a brand new, amazing senior living complex a few miles away in Seabrook for literally just a few dollars more. She got a brand new never lived in unit with her own attached garage that is absolutely gorgeous, with 11' ceilings, crown molding, granite countertops, all LED lighting, top of the line appliances, amazing pool, restaurant, bar, hair salon, theatre, dog park for her pet, etc. She absolutely LOVES her new apartment at Chesapeake Bay!No regrets at all leaving Lake Haven!
