One year ago today I took my mother to Morning Pointe at Westland Drive. It was a horrible experience. Without going into a lot of unnecessary details, the takeaway Id like for everyone to have from my experience is this: please do not take your parents there if they need a high level of care, meaning, if they are having trouble walking, dressing, ambulating, transferring from the bed to a wheelchair, confusion where they cannot tell you how they have been treated. Morning Pointe is not staffed to be able to take adequate care of your loved one unless they just need basic help that they could probably do on their own with assistance. My mother suffered there, She fell 3 to 4 times and was so unhappy when we were told to just leave her there at the staffs insistence the first night and week. Soon, we had to hire a sitter in order for her to stay there because she was not safe to be alone in her room. Dementia is a horrible disease, and when it is combined with a high level of physical limitations, it is a living hell for the patient and the family. I feel like Morning Pointe should not have accepted my mother as a resident there. The staff ratios were way too low and the turnover high. The new staff would not know the particulars about the resident, and things were not done correctly resulting in frustration, and unnecessary injury. I asked for permission to put a camera in my mothers room not to monitor staff but to keep an eye on her for safety reasons, and they refused. They were going to kick us out because of this scamera which was comforting to me to be able to see if she was sleeping or on the floor after falling or up all night. The experience was a nightmare and I have very hard feelings against the management and the owner for not even having the courtesy to reach out to me regarding my complaints. Bottom line is, if you take your loved one there, you better not question them or criticize them or think out of the box, because they will discharge you in a quick second. I would not recommend this place to anyone I know that needs any type of on hands care, other than basic help with ADLs. Try everything you can to keep your loved one in their home environment so that you dont have to live with the frustration and the guilt and the pain of seeing your loved one confused and bewildered every day, you wont have to experience the emotional pain my family and I went through with our mother not getting adequate care there. She had 2 head injuries and a broken foot within one month. As family, we need to hold these assisted-living facilities accountable, we need to complain loudly and hold them to high standards of care. Inadequate staffing, bad attitudes of staff and management should not be tolerated by their paying customers.

My mother, Jean, moved into the memory care unit, The Lantern, in early July. She had late stage Alzheimers and was not able to really engage in the wonderful activities offered daily. She had been in several other memory care facilities but none of those could compare to the experience we had at Morning Pointe. From my first inquiry, Lisa was very responsive and helpful. She eased my mind about moving my Mother once again. Kari, the Lantern Program Director has truly been an angel. She understood mine and my mothers needs and helped us get settled during this difficult time. The caregivers and the nursing team deserve all the praise. They were all very patient, respectful and loving with all the residents. My mother passed away on September 4th. The 2 weeks prior to her passing, I spent a lot of time at the facility. I felt the compassion and the love from all who worked there. They have extremely difficult jobs but they handled the entire process with grace. I so wish I had moved my Mother there earlier. It was a blessing from God that he choose this place for Moms final days. Many thanks and gratitude to a fabulous team, who I now consider family!
