My feedback is specific to our experience in Memory Care for both of my parents, admitted to Sunrise North Hills in May 2019. However, this information may still be relevant if you are considering Assisted Living as Memory Care could be required for your family member in the future and moving to a new facility is something you will want to avoid if possible. After a thorough review of available Assisted Living and Memory Care facilities in the Raleigh/Wake Forest area, Sunrise North Hills was our second choice. Our top criteria were, #1 quality of patient care, #2 proximity to their family members and church, #3 clean, bright facility, and #4 cost. When an unexpected medical condition required full time professional care for my father, our first choice did not have a room available. We admitted my parents to Sunrise North Hills and within the first week, we were experiencing issues with their care and administrative aspects. As issues arose, we provided management with timely, detailed feedback hoping to improve their care and living experience. After 6 months of worsening care and conditions, we reached out to our first choice Memory Care facility and were able to transfer them within a few days. This was not an easy decision as a move is quite traumatic for individuals with Alzheimers Disease. However, we are so thankful that we made the move! While not perfect, the care and living experience at the new facility meets our expectations and when issues arise, management and staff are extremely responsive and take appropriate actions. What is particularly interesting is that the new facility is providing better care with a significantly lower monthly cost. While my overall rating is low, there were a few care-givers that were amazing, but unfortunately, they were the exception. Also, want I acknowledge that providing care to those with dementia is not easy. But as our experience has shown, it is possible to deliver care that meets reasonable expectations.

While there are some fabulous, caring individual care-givers...the management is atrocious. Beware. Ask lots of questions. We had my parents there for about 6 months and our concerns were not addressed. The head nurse will not allow residents to return after hospitalizations until the resident is 'back up to their previous baseline' which we know is not going to happen with dementia. We were clear from the beginning that our first concern was keeping my parents together, but due to his decline, my father was kept away at a rehab facility after having two hospital stays with pneumonia, while my mom didn't remember where he was. What a nightmare, she didn't understand why she had to move from her home, and then her husband was gone two times. Of course they were continuing to bill for the spot (but not the care) during the 12 weeks. I recommend that you utilize hospice, they can help you navigate unnecessary hospital stays. Visit Sunrise's memory unit at different times of day. Do not base your selection on the Assisted living facility, which is much better, as your loved one will probably need to be moved at some point to memory care. Some workers were callous, at meal time and other times being loud, silly, talking amongst themselves, playing current music, not what the residents would enjoy. Not a calm or pleasant atmosphere for meal time. One time I found a caregiver asleep in a chair while working. Sad. So sad. I apologize to the kind caregivers that are the exception at the facility.

Sunrise helped to guide my family to an appropriate program of care for our beloved elderly grandmother/ Mother. We are so grateful for the warmth and skilled guidance that we received.
