I honestly wouldnt even give this place one star! I have worked here and never in my life have seen anything like this! I used to live in R.I./ Ct and I have worked in some very high end retirement homes in Mystic Ct... but working here..ROACHES falling from the ceilings.. bugs in residents food and having no answers to give these people. Mercury being exposed on the thermostats in all residents rooms. No structure no activities for these people. ALWAYS narcotics missing and no results or activity towards finding the truth. No protocols. Supervisor? Nonexistent. Head nurse doesnt even stay for 2nd shift to get to know the staff. Alarms going off for no reason.. fire alarm will turn on with out explanation maintenance will run down and shut off whole system with out finding the source and fixing it properly. The rotation of people in and out provides zero stability for the residents. Zero safety for staff and residents at night time. No proper locks on the building so ANYONE can walk in at anytime. No lights in the parking lot which lead to a Male trying to get into my car as I was trying to leave after my shift! You report to your superiors and in the chain of command but that only leads to them being mad at you for 'knowing' too much. Dont work here if you have half a brain. They hire and fire for ANY reason. They arent trying to fix issues or create a great place for staff or most importantly the residents.

They have really taken great care of my mother in law. She loves it there. They have the best staff that really are compassionate and try their hardest to please their patients and residents. Thank You Big Elm Nurses and aides!

All of these Five stars come from people that works there. I know for a fact that this retirement center should be shut down! How many times a week would you like to have a small coffee cup of chicken noodle soup that has more liquid than anything else, and when someone wants some more they are YELL at, oh yeah lets not forget the sandwich that is one slice of Budding meat that you can get at Food Lion for 99 cents. This is called their supper, it should be something they eat for lunch. We are so worried about what people are doing to the animals we are letting places like this get by treating your FAMILY MEMBERS any kind of way and you, them and the tax payers are paying for it. Get real and check on your family. Those that be there thanks for caring. Make a difference speak UP and make this Big Elms Retirement center do better or complain to the state like I plan on doing.

I worked at big elm. The main issue at big elm is, they are always short staffed! I have seen multiple residents left up in their wheelchairs for over 12 hours. I worked with several coworkers who had no signs of compassion towards the residents, at times I could hear yelling. After 1st shifts leaves they often leave residents soaking wet, urine dripping from their wheelchair, or bed. I have seen some nasty things during my short stay as employee. In addition, on 3rd shift...All most every employee will go into the 'day room' which is for the residents and sleep... Some slept for 3-5 hours. During the night shift, residents were lucky if they got changed on a timely manner. In addition, I've heard CNA's speak to the residents as if they were DOGS. The food served looks like its all frozen or from a can. Everyday I worked residents complained how hungary they were, and snacks were at times impossible to locate. Please, please never take your beloved family there! Management is also an issue, they spend their time on less important matters, instead on focusing on how to enrich the lives if their residents. Lastly, the building is old and needs major renovations.
