My Mother (who is Deaf and communicates in ASL) had a hip replacement. We called their in patient physical therapy, since she also lives in Waterville, to see if they would take her. They told us they had a bed...and that they were arranging to visit her at the hospital she was at. After I told them she is Deaf and would require an ASL Interpreter, they literally blanked out. They wanted a person who worked in dietary to interpret for her. I asked they sub contract a professional interpreter and I was told that it would be a cost to them. I was told they didn't know if they would be comfortable using an interpreter (wouldn't they be MORE comfortable being able to communicate?!)... and after they researched how to hire an interpreter had more than one person call me back to say now.. that even though they had a bed for her and was about to meet her and she met the Medicare requirements.. all of a sudden they 'couldn't meet her needs'.. when I informed more than one person there they were in violation of the ADA, Title II they didn't even deny it. The people there have absolutely no idea, or even care to help anyone who is Deaf. They have no knowledge of their obligation to accommodate. They claim to care for their community, the same community my Mom has lived in for 40 years.. I guess you they care... unless you're Deaf. It's 2018, the ADA was passed over 20 years ago, pathetic!
