I was a monk there in 1979 when it was an actual monastery. The roshi refused to go there because he considered it to be a bunch of hippies. The zendo was an open roofed building out over the stream. I remember the name as bodhi om mandala. I think they just had 2 rooms for visitors. The menu included chicken. I sat zazen many hours daily.

About 8 years ago, an unexpected snow storm kept me from crossing the mountain to my hotel destination in Colorado. It was New Years Eve and it was freezing... There were no rooms at the local hotels. Someone in town suggested I go to the Zen Center. They graciously invited me to stay.I ended up participating in their Zen ceremony for the New Year (Shogatsu). I am not Buddhist, but I did live in Japan for 2 years and greatly respect the traditions and culture. Although my American body ached from kneeling for so many hours during the ceremony it was truly a life changing experience. I was going through a major life trauma at the time and it was very healing for me.At midnight we all threw our concerns into the bon fire to start the New Year free and then we went and soaked for hours in the hot springs. For the special occasion they had the pools circumscribed with luminary candles in bags. It was tranquil and beautiful, and the waters felt so good after hours of meditation.I have a business trip to NM next week and hope to manage a return visit. Bodhi will forever be a special place for me.
