Just for some balance: my mother has been at The Brook for a little over a month, and I/she couldn't be happier with the staff, the food, and how she is treated. She too has memory issues but the staff have treated her respectfully and patiently. From what I have seen so far, I highly recommend this facility.

Our family found The Brook of Newaygo experience for our dad very pleasant and worry-free. My dad was happy there and enjoyed and cared a great deal for the staff. The nurse often worked directly with dads doctor and his once a week home care nurse. We visited on a weekly basis and also found the staff above board and more than accommodating. His studio apartment was more than we hoped for and the entire building is beautiful and well cared for. The residents we spoke to when we stayed and shared a meal with dad were happy and content. The meal portions were more than sufficient and I found them appealing, and good as did my father. Im grateful for The Brook and their staff and highly recommend them. ....S. Commons

DO NOT place your loved one here if you care about them! My mother has been here three months and I've had nothing but problems right from the very first day. I've had issues ranging from them not giving her meds to trying to give them twice! The food isn't good or isn't prepared correctly, cold, and the residents are not fed nearly enough. My mom's breakfast this morning consisted of one piece of French toast and one sausage link, cold. My two year old grandson eats more than that. The workers don't care, they're lazy, and are just there for a paycheck. Cook running around the kitchen and dining room bare footed, aids smoking outside the dining room with the door propped open and smoke coming in while residents are trying to eat, aids pouring out meds into the palm of their hands then expecting my mom to take them. The list goes on and on. I have two entire pages in my notebook with all the issues, dates, times, and people involved. I have made multiple complaints, had multiple meetings, made multiple phone calls and nothing gets resolved. They continually make excuses, and now, my mother has been evicted! I was given two weeks to move her! And no, I'm not behind on the rent, but because my mother's Alzheimer's causes her to be negative, she has been evicted. I was told, by Nancy Robbins, when I signed the lease, that she could stay there as long as she needed, till the end, as long as she did not wander or become combative. Well, now they don't want to deal with her or my complaints and so she is being evicted. They tell you lies to make you want to put your loved ones here, they rope you in with a beautiful building, but it's not worth your loved one's health. Now my mom will be separated from her dying boyfriend because we have to move her so far away. They will tell you your loved one is lying and making things up, but we have a nanny cam in her apartment and she is not lying. I wish I could post pictures here. If you go in, speak to the residents, they'll tell you how awful it is. I've heard them make many remarks to staff but out falls on deaf ears, they don't care. This is not the place it seems to be, and if you have no choice but to place a loved one here, get a video camera. I have reported this facility to the BBB, the ombudsmen, and filed a complaint with the state of Michigan, and contacted my attorney.
