I would not suggest this experience to anyone. It was pricey for the train tickets and tickets for a short tour in the mine. Spent 2 hrs in the old Cole mining town, for what? I walked through the sights and was done in 15 minutes (even took the time to read the history info). The people there was not very informative about the history of the town except for the lady who gave a short tour of the church/school. I was very disappointed.

It has changed a lot since we last rode. It was not worth the $102 we paid for the 4 tickets (3 adults, 1 child) for a 30 minute train ride down and then 30 minutes back. To sit at Barthell for 2 hours is a total waste of time as there is not a lot to see. We were extremely disappointed and won't be back. My best advice if you really want to see the old mining camps, save your money, and a very noisy short train ride and drive yourself.

Loved it! It was a nice train ride to the coal camp. It was beautiful. We were stopped there for two hours because they had had a landslide sometime last year and it bent the tracks and trains can no longer get down there. However, we fiddled around there and looked at the store, the church/school, and the other buildings they had there in the meantime. Once we were back in Sterns, we ate at the Whistle stop and then drove on down to the Blue Heron coal camp. It was beautiful! I recommend going.
