I adopted a Yorkshire Terrier/ Chihuahua 'Chorkie' here two years ago. Within a few days, we were the best of friends. She is my constant companion. Almost Home's staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and very caring. The facilitys is spotless. will I adopt from there again.

Our family was so excited to be getting another dog. We have had many pets over the years and after our 2 little dogs passed away (from old age related causes) we went for about a year and decided we were ready for another dog. We talked with several shelters in northern Iowa and we had specific needs when it came to the kind of temperament we had to have. We run our own daycare out of our home so we have children running around for 11 hours each day, and we have 2 cats that we have had for 9 and 10 years. We were very clear that the dog would have to be good with kids and cats. We were assured that the dog they were recommending was the one for us! We were cautious with both when we brought our dog home, and Thank God we were, because neither of those things were true about this dog. If we would have trusted the shelter's opinion, we may have had a very terrible problem! We were looking for an animal that could interact with the kids and be a happy addition to our home and our daycare family. At the moment that cannot be a reality! This dog has issues with kids and lesser issues with cats. She also deals with severe separation anxiety, which we were not told. We feel as though we didn't quite get the whole story with this dog. We will be going through some intense training with our new dog and we believe she is smart and will learn and come out of these behaviors. What the shelter said and what was actually true about this dog were very different. We will do what is necessary and right for our new dog Winnie. It is unfortunate that this shelter handled things this way. This dog was not what they said, and there honestly could have been a very tragic issue. We are fortunate we did not listen to what they said and followed our instincts. We are the kind of people that do not give up on an animal, we do everything we possibly can to make it work, and we will. Winnie will be well taken care of and given the training and discipline she needs. We hope this shelter does not make the same mistakes with other dogs, because as in our case there were little children involved. We keep her separated from the daycare all day long and she is only able to be truly free when it is just our family in the house. That was not what we were hoping for or expecting, especially after being told she would be great for the kids and cats! Our family has always been champions for lost, stray, and shelter pets, we've never had anything else! We believe in the good work that these places do! We pray they continue to do this wonderful work, and are very careful of how they place the animals in new homes.

It's an animal shelter run by a small staff and a crew of volunteers. My daughters have volunteered there, and we have adopted a dog from them. They seem to genuinely care about the welfare of the animals. They can seem a bit disorganized at times, due to communication between staff/volunteers. The building is kept pretty clean, considering how many animals are there.

Pretty sad this place finds someones dog and the folks are excited to get it back only to be told they cant. Then their dog gets adopted by another family. Place is a joke!!!

I think their prices are way to much for a dog or cat. $120.00 for a rescue pet. I know it takes a lot to house, feed, medicine etc... It should be about the pets most people have a hard time coming up with the money for the adoption. That does not mean the person will be unable to love and take care of the pet as well as someone with money.

Friendly staff. A wide variety of selection there. Application processing is pretty quick and painless. Lots of meet and greet areas to socialize with the animal. I have had my cat from them for about 7 yrs now and was contemplating adopting another animal from them.

After having to put my 16 year old cat Sparky down 2 weeks ago I decided I need another cat. Went out there, they asked how can help and I said want to browse. They told me more than happy to look around. With about 61 to look at and with a staff member back there to answer questions and even got out the cat to see if friendly I am picking up Grace tomorrow.

We got our dog from Almost Home and she is the best. Since then we volunteered there. We stopped helping because staff changed. The new staff does not work with the animals. You can go in and hind them sitting complaining and with no animals. They are rude to people coming in. The litter pans are dirty and I viewed dogs standing in their own urine. As for the physical part of the facility it was beautiful but is slowly being run down from lack of cleaning. When informing the man who runs the place of the conditions I found he snapped at me. I was told I am a liar with a agenda. As I stood in the facility 3 young men came in driving a couple hours to see a dog. They had called ahead and staff told them the animal was there and still needed to be adopted. As they inquired where the animal was they where told to come back a different day the animal didn't feel well. They would not give more info to the men and when they replied that they where still interested and asked to fill out a application they refused them and said they can get one when they come back. All the time before and after the paid staff sat be find and on the desk talking and cursing about the animals. It sickens me that this facility has the potential to be great and is allowing this.

I'm absolutely disgusted that your facility that claims to be a 'no kill' shelter recently put down two pit bulls that were entrusted to your care, and to ban any further intake of 'bully' breeds. Just 2 weeks ago, I used my very limited resources to transport Chevy from Des Moines to your 'shelter' under the impression that he was going to be well taken care. I'm devastated that you have further lost one of his greatest allies for LIFE when Frankie was forced to leave due to your poor decision to divert from the now false mission of being a no-kill shelter. Please do us all a favor by taking 'Home' out of your name and simply calling yourselves 'Almost Humane Society of North Central Iowa.' I think that would be much more fitting.
