I've seen a number of assisted living facilities, and the Carlton is head and shoulders above any other place I've visited. My father has been there for a year and a half now, and the excellent staff has done everything they can think of to make his time enjoyable. Even during the pandemic, when family and friends can't visit and they can't allow their outside entertainers and exercise leaders and so forth, they have been very imaginative about fun but safe activities, everything from socially distanced hallway exercise classes to door decorating contests. I recommend them highly.

My aunt experienced a life changing fall that required her to move to Senior living. She had visited a friend at Carlton in San Leandro for years and so knew this was where she wanted to go. She was in the Assisted living side for only a month before she was diagnosed with dementia. The management and staff gave us exceptional guidance, help and emotional support during that time. The Memory Care side was equally well run. It was a much smaller environment, which with dementia is comforting and the staff could interact with all the residence easily. When it came time for Hospice, she was cared for with incredible respect and compassion. I always felt she was safe (and I visited frequently). I never regretted the decision of placing her at Carlton San Leandro. I am so grateful to the management and staff. Without their help and knowledge, the stress would have been overwhelming.

Staff is generally very nice to my Mom and the facility is kept clean. They have good entertainment and decorate nicely for all the holidays. One downside is they have annual price increases of 5-6% for your apt. which can be hard on those with fixed incomes. Just be prepared financially and plan accordingly.

My grandpa lived here many years ago for approximately 4 years while he was suffering from dementia. Sad time for the family but the staff at this community are exceptional human beings and took such great care of him. They would play the old music and movies from his early years and he'd perk up and several times I remember him getting up and dancing with the staff. Even though he was nearing the end of his life at this point, he was truly in the best care possible. I will be forever grateful for this... I also remember the community always being festive and all kinds of activities for the residents to partake in. I truly wish this for every senior, dementia or no dementia, just a happy place to be.
